Marilyn poses in the light magenta dress she wore to sing “Kiss,” in the film’s most famous scene. The [Dorothy] Jeakins creation fairly screams “I’m available!” The low-cut top looks as if a tug on the bow would reveal Rose’s breasts. The peek-a-boo midriff leads to a very unsual feature, a zipper that anyone bold enough could easily pull down! Much more sedate versions of this dress became popular retail items after the film was released.
Monroe wears the dress to a ballyhooed press party at the Hollywood hills home of bandleader Ray Anthony on August 3, 1952. She arrived by helicopter to publicize Anthony’s new record, “Marilyn.” She chatted with reporters from around the world and posed with attendees including Lassie and her old buddy, Mickey Rooney.
