To design her gown for the star-studded gala of the forty-fifth birthday celebration for President John Kennedy, Marilyn turned to Jean Louis. Marilyn asked him to create something “historic” for her that would show off her newly slim figure and wow the crowd.
Berniece Miracle (Marilyn’s half-sister) recalled:
“Jean Louis sketched two possibilities. Both were formfitting. One was covered in sequins, the other in rhinestones. One dipped to the waist in back; the other was décolleté.’
‘Berniece, which do you think I should wear?’ [asked Monroe]
‘Well honey, you know which side I think is your best.’”
